Many fans are disappointed as the 65th Golden Globes will no longer be broadcast in its full glory tonight, January 13, 2008. Instead, we are forced to endure a one-hour news conference at 9 p.m. EST on NBC. I am highly disappointed, as this is the biggest award show that I care to watch each award season, and many of my personal favorites are up for awards this year. But nevertheless, I will watch the news conference and hope to see my picks and preferences get their just rewards.
Here is the full list of nominees, directly from the Golden Globes website. I've included my pics, preferences, and predictions for the winners.
BEST MOTION PICTURE - DRAMA
AMERICAN GANGSTER
ATONEMENT
EASTERN PROMISES
THE GREAT DEBATERS
MICHAEL CLAYTON
NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN
THERE WILL BE BLOOD
The Critics went for No Country for Old Men, so I am inclined to believe it will get this one, as well. Atonement has fallen short of expectations. I'm interested in American Gangster, though.
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE - DRAMA
CATE BLANCHETT - ELIZABETH: THE GOLDEN AGE
JULIE CHRISTIE - AWAY FROM HER
JODIE FOSTER - THE BRAVE ONE
ANGELINA JOLIE - A MIGHTY HEART
KEIRA KNIGHTLEY - ATONEMENT
Julie Christie got this at the Critics Choice Awards. I'll always root for Cate Blanchett, though.
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE - DRAMA
GEORGE CLOONEY - MICHAEL CLAYTON
DANIEL DAY-LEWIS - THERE WILL BE BLOOD
JAMES MCAVOY - ATONEMENT
VIGGO MORTENSEN - EASTERN PROMISES
DENZEL WASHINGTON - AMERICAN GANGSTER
The Critic went to Daniel Day-Lewis. I'll not stray.
BEST MOTION PICTURE - COMEDY OR MUSICAL
ACROSS THE UNIVERSE
CHARLIE WILSON'S WAR
HAIRSPRAY
JUNO
SWEENEY TODD: THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET
Chances are, it will be a toss-up between Hairspray and Juno. I would much rather see Juno get it.
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE - COMEDY OR MUSICAL
AMY ADAMS - ENCHANTED
NIKKI BLONSKY - HAIRSPRAY
HELENA BONHAM CARTER - SWEENEY TODD: THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET
MARION COTILLARD - LA VIE EN ROSE
ELLEN PAGE - JUNO
You have a lot of good competition in this category. What I like so much about the Golden Globes is that it shares the wealth and doesn't try to compare apples to oranges as much as apples to pears in its categories. (I mean, it's hard to compare a performance in a comedy or musical to a drama, in my opinion.) Nikki Blonsky is a favorite but has strong competition from Amy Adams and Marion Cotillard. But with all of the buzz surrounding Juno, perhaps Ellen Page will get it. For some reason, though, I am more drawn to Amy Adams in this category.
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE - COMEDY OR MUSICAL
JOHNNY DEPP - SWEENEY TODD: THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET
RYAN GOSLING - LARS AND THE REAL GIRL
TOM HANKS - CHARLIE WILSON'S WAR
PHILIP SEYMOUR HOFFMAN - THE SAVAGES
JOHN C. REILLY - WALK HARD: THE DEWEY COX STORY
Again, Philip Seymour Hoffman is the hometown hero in Hollywood. I didn't root for him as much in 2005 for his role as Truman Capote, because I was all over Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny Cash. I'm trying to make up for it this year, out of a sense of duty. But I'd love to see Johnny Depp get it for Sweeney Todd.
BEST ANIMATED FEATURE FILM
BEE MOVIE
RATATOUILLE
THE SIMPSONS MOVIE
Hands down, Ratatouille. Disney + Pixar = Magic and Awards
BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM
4 MONTHS, 3 WEEKS AND 2 DAYS (ROMANIA)
THE DIVING BELL AND THE BUTTERFLY (FRANCE AND USA)
THE KITE RUNNER (USA)
LUST, CAUTION (TAIWAN)
PERSEPOLIS (FRANCE)
This was given to The Diving Bell at the Critics Choice. I think it's only real competition would be The Kite Runner.
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A MOTION PICTURE
CATE BLANCHETT - I'M NOT THERE
JULIA ROBERTS - CHARLIE WILSON'S WAR
SAOIRSE RONAN -ATONEMENT
AMY RYAN - GONE BABY GONE
TILDA SWINTON - MICHAEL CLAYTON
This was given to Amy Ryan for Gone Baby Gone in the Critics Choice. I'm still awed by Cate Blancett's performance in I'm Not There, even though I really didn't care for the movie. (Neither did the critics.)
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A MOTION PICTURE
CASEY AFFLECK - THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD
JAVIER BARDEM -NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN
PHILIP SEYMOUR HOFFMAN - CHARLIE WILSON'S WAR
JOHN TRAVOLTA - HAIRSPRAY
TOM WILKINSON - MICHAEL CLAYTON
This one went to Javier Bardem at the Critics. Again, I'm rooting for the hometown hero, as well.
BEST DIRECTOR - MOTION PICTURE
TIM BURTON - SWEENEY TODD: THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET
ETHAN COEN & JOEL COEN - NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN
JULIAN SCHNABEL - THE DIVING BELL AND THE BUTTERFLY
RIDLEY SCOTT - AMERICAN GANGSTER
JOE WRIGHT - ATONEMENT
The Critics liked the Coen Brothers for this category. I'm kind of a fan of Tim Burton, as well.
BEST SCREENPLAY - MOTION PICTURE
DIABLO CODY - JUNO
ETHAN COEN & JOEL COEN - NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN
CHRISTOPHER HAMPTON - ATONEMENT
RONALD HARWOOD - THE DIVING BELL AND THE BUTTERFLY
AARON SORKIN - CHARLIE WILSON'S WAR
Juno walked away with this one at the Critics. I'll keep that pick.
BEST ORIGINAL SCORE - MOTION PICTURE
MICHAEL BROOK with KAKI KING and EDDIE VEDDER - INTO THE WILD
CLINT EASTWOOD - GRACE IS GONE
ALBERTO IGLESIAS - THE KITE RUNNER
DARIO MARIANELLI - ATONEMENT
HOWARD SHORE - EASTERN PROMISES
I have to go for Into the Wild and cannot even consider anything else. The music in that movie provided the inner monologue of Christopher McCandless. The music haunts me and has become a part of my very being. Yes, I'm a big Eddie Vedder fan, so that is part of it. But no other music in the movies has spoken so strongly. You go to the movie and the songs resonate in your head for hours, if not days, afterwards. They make you feel something. And that's the point of the score of a movie: to make you feel.
BEST ORIGINAL SONG - MOTION PICTURE
“DESPEDIDA” - LOVE IN THE TIME OF CHOLERA
Music by: Shakira and Antonio Pinto
Lyrics by: Shakira
“GRACE IS GONE” - GRACE IS GONE
Music by: Clint Eastwood
Lyrics by: Carole Bayer Sager
“GUARANTEED” - INTO THE WILD
Music & Lyrics by: Eddie Vedder
“THAT'S HOW YOU KNOW” - ENCHANTED
Music By: Alan Menken
Lyrics By: Stephen Schwartz
“WALK HARD” - WALK HARD: THE DEWEY COX STORY
Music & Lyrics by: Marshall Crenshaw, John C. Reilly, Judd Apatow and Jake Kasdan
With the above being said, obviously I desperately want Eddie Vedder to win for “Guaranteed”. LISTEN to it sometime. Watch the video at VH1. See the movie, and you'll understand.
BEST TELEVISION SERIES - DRAMA
BIG LOVE (HBO)
DAMAGES (FX NETWORKS)
GREY'S ANATOMY (ABC)
HOUSE (FOX)
MAD MEN (AMC)
THE TUDORS (SHOWTIME)
House and Grey's Anatomy are definite favorites among the people and the critics. The Tudors has received a lot of critical acclaim, though I haven't been able to sit through the entire series, yet. I don't watch a lot of tv, because I think most shows suck, but I am a big fan of House.
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A TELEVISION SERIES - DRAMA
PATRICIA ARQUETTE - MEDIUM
GLENN CLOSE - DAMAGES
MINNIE DRIVER - THE RICHES
EDIE FALCO - THE SOPRANOS
SALLY FIELD - BROTHERS & SISTERS
HOLLY HUNTER - SAVING GRACE
KYRA SEDGWICK - THE CLOSER
How Patricia Arquette has gotten this award in the past for her ability to sit and and draw in her breath when waking up from a deep sleep in which she has had a vision, I'll never know. I'm obviously not a fan of the show. Kyra Sedgwick is a past recipient, worthy of her award. But I won't be surprised if Edie Falco gets one last nod for the Sopranos.
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A TELEVISION SERIES - DRAMA
MICHAEL C. HALL - DEXTER
JON HAMM - MAD MEN
HUGH LAURIE - HOUSE
JONATHAN RHYS MEYERS - THE TUDORS
BILL PAXTON - BIG LOVE
I just said that I like House, and I would love to see Hugh Laurie get this award again. But my love for Hugh Laurie is tremendously eclipsed by my obsession with Michael C. Hall as Dexter. Dexter is my favorite show, and you can currently find it on Showtime. After much editing, you'll be able to watch it on CBS. His character is intriguing as a sympathetic serial killer with a conscience. He is gorgeous, as well as talented, and I'm really rooting for him.
BEST TELEVISION SERIES - COMEDY OR MUSICAL
30 ROCK (NBC)
CALIFORNICATION (SHOWTIME)
ENTOURAGE (HBO)
EXTRAS (HBO)
PUSHING DAISIES (ABC)
The only one of these that I actively watched was Californication. It was definitely unique, in my opinion. I'd like to see it win, but I won't be surprised to see the award go to 30 Rock.
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A TELEVISION SERIES -COMEDY OR MUSICAL
CHRISTINA APPLEGATE - SAMANTHA WHO?
AMERICA FERRERA - UGLY BETTY
TINA FEY - 30 ROCK
ANNA FRIEL - PUSHING DAISIES
MARY-LOUISE PARKER - WEEDS
Mary-Louise Parker has won this in the past, as has America Ferrera. I'd like to see Tina Fey win, though I like the other two, as well.
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A TELEVISION SERIES - COMEDY OR MUSICAL
ALEC BALDWIN - 30 ROCK
STEVE CARELL - THE OFFICE
DAVID DUCHOVNY - CALIFORNICATION
RICKY GERVAIS - EXTRAS
LEE PACE - PUSHING DAISIES
Again, I'll root for David Duchovny, as I loved Californication. I like Steve Carell a lot, but I just don't care for the Office.
BEST MINI-SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION
BURY MY HEART AT WOUNDED KNEE (HBO)
THE COMPANY (TNT)
FIVE DAYS (HBO)
LONGFORD (HBO)
THE STATE WITHIN (BBC AMERICA)
This went to Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee in the Critics Choice. I'll stand by that.
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MINI-SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION
BRYCE DALLAS HOWARD - AS YOU LIKE IT
DEBRA MESSING - THE STARTER WIFE
QUEEN LATIFAH - LIFE SUPPORT
SISSY SPACEK - PICTURES OF HOLLIS WOODS
RUTH WILSON - JANE EYRE
Queen Latifah never ceases to amaze me with her acting ability. But I have to go for Ruth Wilson in Jane Eyre. Masterpiece Theatre just re-ran it over the past two weekends, and my father and I were glued to the television. I have Ruth Wilson now as one of my two favorite Jane Eyres (the other one being Charlotte Gainsburg in the 1996 theatrical adaptation) of all adaptations I have seen.
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MINI-SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION
ADAM BEACH - BURY MY HEART AT WOUNDED KNEE
ERNEST BORGNINE - A GRANDPA FOR CHRISTMAS
JIM BROADBENT - LONGFORD
JASON ISAACS - THE STATE WITHIN
JAMES NESBITT - JEKYLL
I really have no idea here. Maybe Adam Beach in BMHAWK. I've developed a slight soft spot for Ernest Borgnine, though, after his recent stints on Spongebob, haha.
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A SERIES, MINI-SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION
ROSE BYRNE - DAMAGES
RACHEL GRIFFITHS - BROTHERS & SISTERS
KATHERINE HEIGL - GREY'S ANATOMY
SAMANTHA MORTON - LONGFORD
ANNA PAQUIN - BURY MY HEART AT WOUNDED KNEE
JAIME PRESSLY - MY NAME IS EARL
Anna Paquin tends to be a strong actress. (She actually played the young Jane Eyre in the 1996 version that I like so well.) I think she does well in most of her roles, and I will root for her.
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A SERIES, MINI-SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION
TED DANSON - DAMAGES
KEVIN DILLON - ENTOURAGE
JEREMY PIVEN - ENTOURAGE
ANDY SERKIS - LONGFORD
WILLIAM SHATNER - BOSTON LEGAL
DONALD SUTHERLAND - DIRTY SEXY MONEY
I'm a big fan of Jeremy Piven from way back. I have to root for him.
So, there it is. The big list, my hopes and dreams as well as some more logical picks. Look for a posting later tonight, following the big news conference.
