Homebrewing - How to Make Your Own Beer at Home

By Ron King

If you enjoy having beer on hand regularly, you might actually enjoy brewing your own from time to time. The process of homebrewing is not really difficult to do, provided you know a few basic steps along the way. Here are some things that you can do in order to get yourself started quickly.

The first step in homebrewing is actually to gather all of the ingredients and equipment that you are going to need in order to get a batch going. Although it certainly is possible for you to buy all of these things individually, it is easier if you start out by getting a beer kit. These typically contain everything that is necessary to get going and many of the tools that are included can be reused on future batches.

Of all of the different things that is necessary for you to keep in mind whenever you are brewing beer, sterilization is by far the most important. If you do not sterilize (often called sanitize) the equipment properly, you are more than likely going to end up ruining the batch and perhaps giving up on homebrewing altogether. Make sure that you sterilize and you'll have a much better experience overall.

The list of ingredients that are necessary in order for you to brew the beer is actually quite short. Included in your beer kit should be malt extract, hops and yeast. You will need to add water and sugar to these ingredients in order to get the batch going. Choosing different types of malt extract will make a difference in the way that the beer looks and tastes. You can either try brewing a batch of your favorite type of beer or be a little bit adventurous and try something new.

The first real step in homebrewing is making the wort. This is where you mix all the ingredients together and put it through a heating and cooling process. Once the wort has been successfully made, you can begin the fermentation process, which will take anywhere from two to three weeks.

After the fermentation process is over, the homebrewing is really completed and the only other step that is necessary is for you to bottle the beer and chill it if desired. Of course, you will have the all important step of tasting the beer and enjoying it with friends, but that really is a hobby all of its own.

Essential and Not So Essential Beer Brewing Equipment

By Ron King

Whether you are just starting out with brewing your first batch of beer or if you have been homebrewing for quite some time, having the right equipment is going to make all the difference in the final batch. Since there are so many different pieces of equipment that are available, it can be difficult to choose the ones that you are going to use in your own hobby. Here are some of the more essential pieces of beer brewing equipment, along with some that are nice to have but are not so essential.

Most of the equipment that is necessary to really get a batch going will be available in any good starter beer kit. These would include such things as the sanitizer, a hydrometer in many cases, a funnel and the fermenter along with an airlock. With just these basic pieces of beer brewing equipment, it is possible for you to get a batch under way and to bring it to completion.

An important piece of brewing equipment that is sometimes included in this starter kit and at other times is not included is the bottle capper. Make sure that you have one of these available, along with a good supply of bottles and new caps by the time your batch of brew is completed.

Whenever you're first starting a new batch of beer, it is going to be necessary for you to heat the wort and then to cool it again in order to get it ready for the fermentation process. There is specific beer brewing equipment that is available which will both heat it and cool it properly. Although this is something that can be done without this equipment, it does make it much more convenient and in many cases, it helps to make the final product more palatable.

Racking equipment is something else that many home brewers enjoy owning. It can make the process of racking the beer a lot more pleasant and as is the case with most beer brewing equipment, can help to make the final product a better one.

The same is also true with many of the cleaning utensils that are available, as these can help you to do specialized tasks which may be difficult if they were done on their own.

Although it certainly is not necessary for you to have any beer brewing equipment outside of the basics, it is the little things that can make your hobby much more enjoyable. There's no doubt that you will want to add some of this equipment to your arsenal as you continue to grow in your enjoyment of the hobby.

Beer Kits - Tastes Good, Less Work

By Ron King

Anyone interested in the subject of home beer brewing should realize that it's an entertaining hobby that requires patience and a tiny bit of skill, but little actual effort. If you're considering starting this great pastime, you might wonder if you should purchase beer kits as opposed to using household items.

Although experienced home beer makers can create some pretty good brew using household ingredients, for those who are just beginning it's definitely advised that you grab a beer kit. It comes down to this: would you rather start with a lot of work to create a tepid product, or even a total failure; or would you rather be guaranteed a superior product with almost no effort? It's up to you.

The caliber of your homebrewing equipment and the ingredients you choose will have a tremendous effect on the quality of your result. For example, the containers to ferment your beer that are part of home beer kits are food-grade, meaning that the plastic and coating used in making the container will not interfere with the fermenting process or affect the taste of the completed product. The equipment that comes with beer brewing kits is designed to produce the best beer.

The most expensive home beer kits generally offer glass fermentation containers. That is because many homebrewers feel that plastic will interfere with the taste of the beer, even just a little. Glass is often believed to deliver a taste that is cleaner and just a touch better. Whether there is a taste difference that you can distinguish might better be left for later in your experience. You can always get a glass fermenter later to see for yourself if it matters.

Many homebrewing kits also come with ingredients and detailed instructions for making your beer. This is useful for the beginner, who otherwise has to look around trying to get the exact grain or yeast. Having everything assembled in a beer kit, means you're far more likely to create a batch of delicious beer — leaving you the time to plan the party.

To add even more flavor, taste, and variety to your beer batches, fruit flavors, honey, and several varieties of hops and yeast are available from your beer brewing supplies vendor. The instructions will direct you regarding how much of each flavoring to use to enhance, not overpower, your beer.

Most people are shocked at how affordable even the best home brewing kits are. Frequently they're under $100 and they're intended to last a lifetime, so they are an investment in adventure.

Beer Kits - Choices

By Ron King

If you enjoy a beer and you like to experiment with different beer tastes, you should try brewing your own homebrew. It can be a very fun experience, not only enjoying the beer after it is brewed, but the entire process of seeing how it is done.

The quickest way for you to get started with this hobby is to pick up one of the beer kits that are available, either online or at a local store. There are some options for you to keep in mind, however, whenever you are choosing one of these kits.

The first thing to be considered is whether it is your first time brewing beer or if you've been brewing it for some time. The reason why is that many starter beer kits will provide you with absolutely everything you need to get a batch going.

If you've done this before, you more than likely don't need some of the more basic materials that come in such a kit. Therefore, it is a good idea to get a complete starter kit if you're first starting, and thereafter to just supplement with smaller kits with later batches.

There are a number of choices you're going to need to make which will determine the type of beer that you are going to get. Although most of us have a favorite type of beer that we enjoy drinking, it's always exciting to experiment with different tastes in order to see what results we get. By making a few small changes within the beer kits, you can change the entire batch, yielding interesting to fabulous results.

Finally, to keep in mind whenever you are looking at beer kits is that only a few of them are going to provide you with bottles, bottle caps and the bottle capper. Although you'll have time to gather these items while your batch is brewing, it is a good idea to consider buying them at the same time as your beer kit. That's one less thing to worry about later.
